“God has not promised to spare us from all pain and suffering. We see that as our loved ones lie in hospitals and hospices awaiting death. However, they do not wait alone, for God has promised us grace to endure until the end of our earthly journey, and then a home in heaven. All this can be ours, because Christ has died for our sins and given us a promise that, if we trust Him, all is well. We are in our Father‟s hands.” Rev. Homer Larson, speaker on the Christian Crusaders radio program This “Life Quote” is from Lutherans For Life – www.lutheransforlife.org.

This month I am going to tell you about an eye disease called Macular Degeneration or AMD. This is a degenerative condition of the retina responsible for central vision. This condition affects nearly 2 million Americans. And is the leading cause of blindness in people over 60. There are 2 types. Wet or dry, in about 10% of the cases. It is caused by excessive blood vessel growth and fluid leakage in the retina. This “wet” form. Which is often treated with lasers or drugs to retard the growth and fluid leakage in the abnormal vessels, is responsible for the most of the AMD related blindness. The majority of affected patients have “dry” AMD, marked by a build-up of metabolic waste products in the macula. These lesions interfere with blood flow to the macula and impair function of light-sensitive cells. This type of AMD progresses more slowly and results in less severe vision loss.

Do you know your Bible? Genesis is the first book. God created all things including man and woman, “and it was very good” (Gen. 1:31). The middle of the Bible is Psalm 118:8 as we learned last month, “It is better to take refuge in the Lord than in man”. The last book of the Bible is Revelation. The apostle John had a revelation from God and wrote it down.
